Is it safe to use a baby blanket?

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends a completely bare sleep space (firm mattress with a tightly fitted sheet) for the entire first year.

Why the wait? Infants lack the motor skills, muscle strength, and reflexes to push a blanket away or reposition themselves if it covers their face.

For daytime use: Blankets can be used from birth, but only under direct supervision during tummy time, stroller walks, or nursing.

Our quilts are perfect for back and tummy time, as well as for car seats and strollers. They also work really well for toddler beds.

What should I look for when buying a baby blanket?

When buying a baby blanket, focus on breathability, softness, and safety. Choose lightweight, hypoallergenic fabrics like cotton, linen or bamboo to prevent overheating, and ensure there are no loose threads, ribbons, or embellishments that could pose a choking or entanglement risk.

Size and Purpose
Match the blanket to its intended use:
• Swaddling and Receiving (0–4 months): Square shapes around 40x40 inches give enough room to wrap snugly without loose fabric near the face.
• Stroller and Car seat: Rectangular sizes roughly 30x35 inchesare ideal for on-the-go.
• Play and Tummy Time: Larger, quilted blankets are best to provide a cushioned barrier on the floor.

What are the differences between fabrics?

The choice of fabric for children’s items has a significant impact on their comfort and health. Children spend many hours in bed, so it’s vital that the blanket material is safe, soft, and skin-friendly. The differences between natural and synthetic fabrics are significant – natural fabrics like cotton, bamboo, or linen are generally more breathable and hypoallergenic.

A child’s skin is particularly delicate and prone to irritation, making the right fabric choice crucial. The wrong material can cause allergies, rashes, and discomfort, negatively affecting the child’s sleep quality and comfort.

Cotton is one of the most popular and valued fabrics for children’s use. Its advantages include:
• Breathability: Cotton allows the skin to breathe, especially important at night when body temperature rises.
• Softness: It’s gentle and pleasant to the touch, ensuring comfortable sleep and playtime.
• Naturalness: Cotton is a natural material that rarely causes allergies.
• Durability: Cotton fabric is resistant to frequent washing and use.
